I practised on the loom with some basic weave structures to see which type of yarns were most effective and whether a bolder weave structure worked better than a small, intricate one. From the testing I decided that larger weave structures were more successful.

Warp Yarns
I chose to use two different shades of green and two different shades of grey. One of the grey yarns is a fancy yarn to add texture. I also incorporated a fine silver wire into my warp.

Leaves
I wanted to look at different ways of making texture. One way I did this was by printing with leaves. It created a really interesting feel.

Artwork
The spray paint gives the images a sharp clean edge whilst also creating texture in the background from the uneven spread of paint.

Artwork
I began my artwork by experimenting with spray paint to see what kinds of marks and shapes I could create. I used the silhouettes of birds and kept the images quite flat and simple to give me interesting shapes, which I can then translate into motifs within my woven fabric. I also used chains and feathers to see how well the contrast of soft and hard worked together and whether this is a theme I want to continue through to my final fabrics.
